Hailing from County Down’s seaside resort of Bangor comes Two Door Cinema Club. This drummer-less three-piece combine the frantic tendencies of Vampire Weekend with the smooth production of Death Cab For Cutie, culminating in a sound not to dissimilar to 2007 favourites, Goodbooks. Bursting at the seems with melodious guitar flourishes and vocal harmony, the band manage to create an indie sound with both pop and electronic overtones.

The Crystal Stilts are moody-sounding fuckers who make fabulous stripped-down garage-pop. Their mix-and-match post-punk ditties manage to sound both affected and effective at the same time; they’re weirdly life-affirming and very fun. You want to dance when you hear them– dance with a furrowed brow, maybe, but move around nonetheless. Singer Brad Hargett is from Brooklyn by way of Florida but sounds like he’s from Manchester by way of Slough.
These are weird pop songs you clap your hands along to. They pile a rockabilly riff and nursery school melodies onto a revved-up bass line and sweet surfy 60s organ riff on top of minimalist percussion on the song “Crystal Stilts”. The amazing “Crippled Croon” takes the stand-up drum roll from “Just Like Honey” and grafts echoed-up vocals, a reverb-swallowed guitar, and a sub-atomic bass line onto it. And “Shattered Shine”, with its psychedelic layers of tambourine, guitar, and organ, is a perfect marriage of Ian Curtis-y doom with sunshine-y Shop Assistants-style pop. The Stilts sing in fake Brit-sounding accents, but somehow the dude’s droll, goth-y croon never grates.

Michael Weldon, aka Mr. Copy, is one of Glasgow’s freshest and most talented producers. In July last year, at the tender age of 19, Mr. Copy was one of the winners in the Beatport remix competition for Slam’s ‘We’re Not Here’ single, but it wasn’t until he was contacted to tell him of the win that Soma realised his Glasgow roots. Heralding from the south-side of the river, Copy had been playing right under Soma’s nose the whole time.
Steering away from the laptop route, he has blown the Soma team away with his raw and full-on productions, dropping a thoroughly jacking Live set at the label’s monthly club night, Pressure. Mr. Copy’s musical style is undeniably dance-floor orientated, with driving basslines, stabbing synths and aggressive, rolling percussion. His tracks are peak-time destroyers that will get any dance-floor moving and shakin.
