This Is Music is Edinburgh’s best gig/club crossover night, featuring excellent bands, DJs and bespoke visuals. The gig bit is £3 and the club bit is free.

Over The Wall join us from Glasgow, where they met in 2002. They play some kind of pop-folk-tronica with huge energy. In 2007 they were selected from 1200 unsigned entrants to play at T in the Park’s ‘T Break’ stage and in 2008 from 800 entrants to play at The End of The Road Festival in Dorset. This year, on 17th November, also marks the release of their debut E.P. ‘The Rise and Fall of Over The Wall’ on Motive Sounds Records and some recognition from the likes of Radio 1, 6Music, Xfm, Radio Yorkshire and best of all Sunny Govan. The List said that they lack “broad appeal” and it has been suggested that they should ditch the funny electronic gadgets, get a drummer and a bass player, behave themselves onstage and be in a proper band like everyone else. 

Playdate rock parties real hard.

Tame Impala bring their psych rock to Scotland for the first time and will take in Sneaky Petes on March 12th. Recently signed to the ever reliable Modular, this is one not to be missed.

Back in the day Matt released material on the word famous Skint records and has been in the studio recently working on new material which he will be showcasing as part of a live laptop, decks and FX performance. 

While we are one resident down this time (Mark is at his brothers wedding), we leave you in the more than capable hands and ears of Martin Lightbody & Daragh Byrne.

Eric Carbonara (USA)
‘Carbonara’s playing draws on the rich musical styles from Andalusian Roma-Flamenco to Hindustani & North African folk to form a kind of exalted pidgin style of playing that covers a wide emotional terrain from meditative calm to restless unease. His live solo performances range from contemplative acoustic meditations to aggressively loud electric sets. Carbonara is a regular collaborator in the improvisational outfit Evil Eye Sound System & plays with the Philly psych-rock group Soft People.’

Ben Reynolds is a Glasgow based songwriter, singing lyrically rich and direct folk songs. He will release albums this year on Tomkins Square Records and (as a member of Trembling Bells) on Damon Albarn’s Honest Jon label.

XL recordings, Everything Everything play Sneaky Petes on March 6th as part of their first headline UK tour.

FENCE COLLECTIVE’S – THE RED WELL launch their new album in Sneaky Petes on March 5th and have lined up KID CANAVERAL + CURATORS (acoustic) to support.

Is This Music? Live Review 

Following on from recent Birthday celebrations, Playdate continues to be the most relevant electro night in Edinburgh. As usual we expect to be full to the gills, so early arrival is recommended.

John Hospital is one half of Dirty Hospital. His pedigree stretches back to being a founder member of Bis, the first and only unsigned band ever to play Top of The Pops.

The early beginning of Dirty Hospital can be placed back in 1989 when two brothers, Steven AKA Rob Otnik and John AKA John Hospital got their hands on a second hand Kawai 50e drum machine, taking the place of their Casio MT100 keyboard.

Dirty Hospital was truly born in summer 2000 during some Bis (band/day job) down time, with Steven and John keen to lay down some straight down the line electro. The sound was a Detroit/Berlin/Rave mega-mash. Since 1996, the sounds of UR, Direct Beat and Gigolo inspired the dirty doctors into DJing electro and techno, and further embrace the sound of the drum machine and the synth bass in their music.

The first DH release ‘Rottenrow’ came in 2002 on Radioactive Man’s label Control Tower. In 2004 the first of the ‘Quickness, Sickness, Death’ trilogy appeared on Rottenrow Records – ‘The Quickness Of Dirty Hospital’, the next two landing in subsequent years.

The current Dirty Hospital sound appears like some kind of italo-germanic electrotechno bass fight, as will be evident with the imminent release of the ‘Cryobox’ EP on Chan’N’Mikes records.

Little Death is a promising new band from London that has somehow found its way onto my iPod.

This is a garage rock band that reminds me a lot of The Strokes: singer/songwriter/guitarist Kc Underwood sounds like a dead ringer for Julian Casablancas and the two guitar parts from Underwood and Nathan Hewitt fill the part of me that has been pining for a new Strokes release (it’s 3rd full year without one is fast approaching). Little Death, though, is hardly a Strokes cover band. They craft their own sound that is a little more psychadelic.

“If ever there was a gap in the market it would be for this band. The music they produce is at times Raw but is not afraid to show its fragility when appropriate. Wil Ray approaches his lyrics on stage with an unmistakeable sincerity and delivers them with borderline arrogance, maturity and the bite of a young industry conscious Jarvis Cocker. Each individual song is built with a formula of excitement, finesse and a dash of schizophrenia and this in my opinion, is what makes Max Raptor unmissable. Unleashed in March 2007, Max Raptor have spread their word and logo across the four corners of the U.K”
