This month at Black Tape we’ve got an eclectic lineup of bands and DJs for your delectation.

First off, 3 wonderful bands:

The Invisible are an exciting new act that have most often been compared to ‘a more minimal TV On The Radio.’ While this lofty claim might be a rather daunting expectation to live up to, they more than meet the challenge, and have garnered overwhelming critical acclaim for their self-titled debut. Genre-hopping between prog, funk, krautrock and stright-up pop, The Invisible are one of the most exciting bands to emerge this year.

Support comes from locals Epic26 and Glasgow’sVendor Defender, both of whom are starting to gain attention in their respective cities.

Then, 2 amazing DJs:

This month at Black Tape we’re having a Disco Special, which will see DJ Benetti and Cassavettes of ItaloBlack man the decks to celebrate all things European. Benetti has taken his euphoric mix of lost italo-disco classics all over the world, and is a regular at London’s most of-the-moment night, Cocadisco. We’re very lucky to have him and his visual-mastering partner-in-crime Cassavettes at Black Tape for one night to bring us something altogether different and very exciting indeed.

Towards the end of 2006, three friends – Dave Okumu (Jade Fox, Matthew Herbert), Tom Herbert (Jade Fox, Polar Bear) and Leo Taylor (Gramme, Zongamin, Matthew Herbert) – started work on what was initially intended as Dave’s solo project. An exciting, beautiful album gradually emerged and during the process of its creation the three Londoners fused into a fully-fledged trio; The Invisible was born.

The Voluntary Butler Scheme is, to all intents and purposes, Rob Jones – a young man holed up in Stourbridge just outside Birmingham, writing pop songs of classic sound, vivid imagination and homemade ingenuity.

A couple of years ago, Rob filled the days surfing drum stools, playing for a string of bands and relishing the low-expectations life of a jobbing musician. But then, the offer of a solo gig came up. “So I wrote four or five songs, and played the show,” he explains. And? “And it wasn’t all that,” he laughs. “But straight away, I knew I didn’t want to play stuff with bands anymore. So I thought I’d try a little bit harder and write some proper songs – and I wrote a dozen songs in a couple of weeks.”

After releasing one of the best albums of 2008, “THE MIDNIGHT ORGAN FIGHT” , FRIGHTENED RABBIT frontman Scott Hutchison goes solo for what must be one of his most intimate sets in quite some time as he plays SNEAKY PETES on APRIL 25th solo and acoustic as part of the inaugural BROWN BEAR PROMOTIONS

“For our second party of 2009 we have enlisted the talent of a local lad who’s become a bit of a hero and a legend on the techno and break beat scenes in recent years….

Morphamish has been blasting his mild altering music out of sound systems for the past ten years. Under the names Morph, Sola Perplexus, and latterly as the producer in the group Double Helix, this music has spanned techno, electro, breaks, hiphop, dnb, hardtek and dubstep. 

As well as holding residencies at Pillbox and Obscene, and guesting at numerous events such as Dogma, UTI, Substance, Curios, Pedigree Skum, Tronic, Dissident, React, Confusion and Jakn, he has supported the likes of Neil Landstrumm, Dave Tarrida, Daniel Benavente, Mark Hawkins, Ray Keith and Boxcutter. He has previous releases on Crystal Distortion’s Labrat Audiochemicals, Crunk’s Not Dead, Intonations, and his own Audiodacity label. He’s enjoyed Radio 1 support from Mary Ann Hobbes, Rob Da Bank, Huw Stevens, One World, Vic Galloway, and been included on the Radio 1 Best of Unsigned Podcast. 

For the past couple of years he took a break from playing live regularly, and worked on production, exploring a dubstep influenced sound. This hibernation culminated with the debut Double Helix album (which has received support from Radio 1, Sub FM and Warren Ellis). 

Morphamish returned to club performance this year with a vengeance, and has been unleashing mutating rump-shaking live sets up and down the country. Lately he intertwines bass-line heavy fat techno and electro with fresh energetic dubstep and breakbeat. Plus you never know, you may get the odd smattering of jungle or some anything goes madness. The new name he has adopted reflects a return to the spirit of the dance-floor satisfying Morph sound, but with a new expressive bass hungry party time twist.

We are very much looking forward to this and hope you can join us for another night of solid, underground, bass-heavy techno.

Bringing together the classic songwriting of Stevie Wonder with the 80s pop sensibilities of Cyndi Lauper, North London based singer songwriter Zarif creates her own brand of quirky retro-tinged soul. After featuring on hip hop production duo The Nextmen’s critically acclaimed album “This Was Supposed To Be The Future” including the single “Something Got You”, Zarif had a busy 2008 touring with the Nextmen, playing countless festivals such as Glastonbury and Bestival, and supporting Taio Cruz on his UK tour. She even caught the attention of the Grammy award winning John Legend, who asked her to duet with him at this year’s Tommy Hilfiger Sessions

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone (CFTPA) rocks the world! CFTPA makes songs made up, sung, and played by Owen Ashworth. His first release on Tomlab, “Pocket Symphonies for Lonesome Subway Cars,” gained a lot of attention in the alternative press with references including Moldy Peaches, Mountain Goats, Smog, Silver Jews, Young Marble Giants, and Will Oldham. CFTPA’s self-released debut album, “Answering Machine Music,” which has been hard to find, is now available in an expanded version and features a series of musical answering machine messages disguised as pop songs. Recorded in 1999 on 4-tracks, answering machines, and boom boxes, and played entirely on swap meet and thrift store miniature keyboards, it just may be the best battery-powered pop record you’ve ever heard.
