It’s our next Untitled! And we’ve got another live treat in store for you, from Antoni Maiovvi:

Castanets is an experimental one-man band from San Diego composed of Raymond Raposa and any number of session musicians brought on for his albums and performances. The music has been described as gothic country, avant-garde indie, psychedelic neo-folk, and a slew of other labels.

Fundamentally, the music of Castanets is built on the clash between traditional music styles (folk, country) and modern intuition (avant-garde, psychedelia).

The most noteworthy thing about John Vanderslice’s new album is this: Romanian Names is the best record he’s made to date. The 12 songs represent a career-defining moment, a pitch-perfect collection written and recorded with the utmost care and attention.

Vanderslice is certainly not the first artist to make such a leap several albums into a career – think Guided By Voices on Bee Thousand, Spoon’s Kill the Moonlight or Of Montreal’s Sunlandic Twins. Vanderslice’s newest, his first for Dead Oceans, makes that step and separates itself from an already top-notch body of work.

The process of writing Romanian Names differed from that of prior Vanderslice albums. This time, he moved outside the normal (and by now maybe too comfortable) confines of his famed San Francisco recording studio, Tiny Telephone. He constructed a simple basement studio in his home and wrote and recorded the elemental demos for these songs alone with simply a guitar or piano to accompany his voice. The emphasis was placed on melody and structure, putting thoughts of instrumentation and studio wizardry on hold until there was a complete and stable foundation to build upon. The songs were given time to breathe, to be re-worked and reorganized, and sometimes enough time to be thrown out entirely. Benefiting from this organic and evolutionary process, Romanian Names coheres beautifully.

The album is subtle and lush, with a lyrical approach less concerned with narrative and cohesion than previous JV records, leading to a new tone that feels self-assured, natural, and unafraid. The results come in the way of killer sing-along choruses, memorable and punchy hooks, and knock-out atmospherics.

With remixes of club anthem creator’s Basshunter and electro pop princess September for Ministry of Sound coming in the next few months and a series of 4 EPs scheduled to be released worldwide from now through to winter of 2010 things can only get hotter for Hot Pink Delorean.

Massive tunes “Party Favour” and “Field Agent”  have received worldwide club and radio play from DJs like Carl Cox, Fake Blood, Benny Benassi, Kissy Sell Out (BBC 1 uk), Andy George & Jaymo, Bloody Beetroots, Dave Spoon (BBC 1 uk), Richard Vision (Power 106 LA) and the Loose Cannons (Kiss FM uk), who were lucky enough to grab an interview and an exclusive 30 minute mix from HPD.

COLD CAVE

Cold Cave is an experimental synthpop musical group based in Philadelphia. According to Pitchfork the band’s sound “weaves incomprehensibly distorted vocals with bits of synthetic feedback”, but some songs “also come bearing serious hooks.”

The group was founded by Wesley Eisold, former vocalist of several hardcore groups Some Girls, and also the founder of publisher Heartworm Press. The group represents his first venture into instrumentation.^[1] It now includes additional members: Caralee McElroy (ex-Xiu Xiu), Dominick Fernow (Prurient), and Sarah Lipstate (Noveller, ex-Parts and Labor).

After initial releases on Hospital Productions, What’s Your Rupture?, and Heartworm Press, the band is now signed to Matador Records.

OUR LADIES OF SORROW + THE LEG + ART FAG

Our Ladies of Sorrow create a synth-rock opera accompanied by images from cult horror movies (Argento, Jodorowsky, Bava, Fulci, Zulawski…), with a knowing nod to their classic soundtracks. It comprises as an eagleowl side-project, incorporating members of the Occasional Flickers, Woodenbox with a Fistful of Fivers and Heavy Flow.

Convening to play only once a year, they’ve quickly amassed a loyal following, and their shows are a rare treat not to be missed. And not for the feint-hearted.

The Leg are Edinburgh’s enigmatic vehicle for John Peel-approved songwriter Dan Mutch (Khaya, Desc). Previous performances have included Panda disguises, sparklers, skeleton make-up, a shrunken Tina Turner voodoo doll, and the infamous ‘Vomit Mask’ escapade from this year’s Retreat. Be afraid.
