JOHN SMITH

April 23rd, 2010

JOHN-SMITH-Guitar1The name may be a common one, but this is definitely no ordinary John Smith…

A dazzling and inventive guitarist, with lightning-fast fingerpicking and jaw-dropping, unconventional percussive techniques, he is the possessor of an unforgettable, honeyed, gravelly growl of a voice that belies his age and background. John has toured relentlessly over the past few years, gaining a devoted grassroots following, and has featured on the bills of all the top folk guitarists – John Renbourn, Martin Carthy, Martin Simpson, Davy Graham – and supported mainstream acts like Jools Holland and David Gray.

John is, in fact, the son of a preacher. He grew up in Devon listening to Muddy Waters, Ry Cooder and Paul Simon and was given his first guitar at
the age of 11. As a teenager, he discovered the music of Nick Drake, Bert Jansch and John Renbourn and shut himself away in his bedroom, learning every last note…

By the time he emerged, he was ready to dazzle an unsuspecting public with his guitar skills… so when, as a Uni student, he was asked to make up the numbers in the main competition while stewarding at the Bath International Guitar Festival, John made an immediate impression. He won the event.

As a result, John came to the notice of top guitar players, including Eric Roche, who showed him various percussive techniques, and John Martyn, with whom Smith subsequently toured three times. In fact, John has toured relentlessly over the past few years, gaining a devoted grassroots following, and has featured on the bills of all the top folk guitarists – John Renbourn, Martin Carthy, Martin Simpson, Davy Graham – and supported mainstream acts like Jools Holland and David Gray.

KITTY THE LION + Carrie Mac + Kerrie Lynch

April 21st, 2010

Kitty the Lion began life as the singer-songwriter Anna Meldrum, reared at the seaside on a diet of folk and pop. In this cub stage, Anna toured the open mics and small venues of Glasgow with her acoustic guitar, and sensible shoes because Glasgow is a wet city and cats hate water.
In the next few months and years, Anna was lucky enough to play lots of exciting gigs, including an appearance at Hydro Connect Festival, and a string of support slots with Duke Special. All this gigging led to her to meet many like-minded musicians, so in 2009 the cub grew up into a fully fledged LION, when Joe Rattray on upright bass and Nick Roan on drums were added to the line up. With the addition of these two, and the later recruitment of Sorren Maclean on guitar and Callum Wiseman on mandolin, Kitty the Lion’s sound was upgraded from a meagre mewling to an upbeat, folk-tinged roar.

Kitty the Lion have now been named as a band to watch in 2010 by both Jim Gellatly and Vic Galloway!

“Boasting a strong voice, intelligent, catchy songs and surprisingly witty banter, there is something untouched and unique about Anna Meldrum, that will surely spread faster than swine flu.” – The List
