MEN is a Brooklyn-based band and art/performance collective that focuses on the energy of live performance and radical potential of dance music. MEN speaks to issues such as wartime economies, sexual compromise, and demanding liberties through lyrical content and an exciting stage show. The group began in 2007 as the DJ/production/remix team of LE TIGRE members JD Samson and Johanna Fateman. When the duo began to write new songs, it made sense to merge their efforts with JD’s other new project HIRSUTE. JD and Hirsute members Michael O’Neill (Princess, Ladybug Transistor) and Ginger Brooks Takahashi (LTTR, The Ballet) now comprise the core of MEN, with Johanna and artist Emily Roysdon contributing as writers, consultants, and producers.

Aptly described as ‘Lightning Bolt meets T Rex’, Tweak Bird played possibly the best show we’ve ever had at Sneaky’s in our two-and-a-half years. We cannot recommend this show enough. If you only see one show this year, this is the one. Seriously.

And … They are produced by Melvins’ Dale Crover and Big Business’ Toshi Kasai, Tool took them away for a US tour, and Mike Patton is a fan.

Lichens is the solo project of Chicago based Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, bass player and singer for 90 Day Men and collaborator with White/Light, Om, Cloud Canyon, Matteah Baim and Hisham Bharoocha, amongst others.

Lowe has developed a unique form of spontaneous composition over his two LPs and a number of limited releases, splits and collaborations. His records Omns and the Psychic Nature of Being were both released on Kranky (Atlas Sound, Godspeed You Black Emperor!) and Holy Mountain (Wooden Shjips, Daniel Higgs, Six Organs of Admittance). By means of mutated wordless vocal loops and the layering of fingerpicked acoustic and hypnotic electric guitars, Lowe creates densely atmospheric pieces that blur the boundaries between heavy drone, minimalist and American primitivist artists. Each Lichens show is entirely improvised and unfolds with a sense of evolution and natural process. Lichens exists in it’s current surroundings, allowing Lowe to act as shaman enrapturing listeners and ultimately opening doors.

Lichens will be playing in Edinburgh on the back of performing at Capsule’s Supersonic Festival in Birmingham. This is the only Scottish date on his first UK tour since 2008.

THE DOUGLAS FIRS is a project started in Aberdeen by Neil Insh seven years ago when he started recording in churches, sheds and local halls. After moving to Edinburgh the The Douglas Firs developed into a live band who create rhythmical, ambient (not electronic) guitar rock, which they claim would be verging on prog if they could play their instruments, and didn’t like Buddy Holly so much.

Neil is heavily influenced by the principles held by different scenes such as the 90’s DC scene, the Olympia DIY scene, and the NYC 12k scene (scenes seem to be the theme). The Firs were baptized into Edinburgh’s own DIY scene with their Retreat! festival performance earlier this year.

Samhain might be coming early this October with a spooky line up via Michigan, with Demons (ft. Nate Young of Wolf Eyes) and Sick Llama. This will be their only Scottish date on their UK jaunt before the Supersonic fest in Brum the night after. There will also be some rip roaring support from Edinburgh’s Wraiths. Live visuals, analog synth and noisy invokations at Sneaky Pete’s on October 21st, £6 on the door. Don’t miss this!

DEMONS (Detroit, Michigan, USA/ AA Records, Hanson, American Tapes)
Demons evolved from a synthesizer duo into a Visual Music trio with the incorporation of video artist Alivia Zivich. Working under the name “Video Madness” she often used the music of Demons as soundtracks to her analog video experiments. Demons also features Nate Young, the founding member of Wolf Eyes. Live performances as a group led to the redefining of Demons as Visual Music.

“According to the theory of synaesthesia, sensory perception of one kind can induce sensory experience of another; for example, an individual may “see” certain colors when hearing musical notes. In such instances, sight does not negate hearing, but rather the two senses interact to elicit a heightened state of consciousness. While many art forms can evoke sensorial overlap, music has been considered by many proponents of the theory as an exceptional source for this phenomenon.”

This duo from Detroit made the scariest damn noise album of 2007 with Evocation . Far from the typical free-for-all inanity that dominates the noise scene, Nate Young and Steve Kenney create sounds that are more in line with Carl Zittrer’s horror movie soundtracks, especially his haunting music for Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things . You know that really creepy electronic noise music that’s playing when the zombies come out of their graves? This is an entire album of it. chuck foster (BLOOD SAUSAGE)

SICK LLAMA (Detroit, Michigan, USA) Label: Fag Tapes/Gods of Tundra/Hanson Records
The Michigan psychedelic noise punk solo project of Heath Moerland who is also the Fag Tapes label head. First recording released 12/03 on American Tapes with releases on Gods Of Tundra, Hanson Records, Chondritic Sound to follow. Heath opened for Wolf Eyes on their 2006 tour, played No Fun Festival in NYC and recently played Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival in Montreal with C. Spencer Yeh and Hive Mind. Established in 2004, Fag Tapes has put out over 250 releases and there’s no end in sight. Sick Llama uses tapes, clarinet, and whatever else is laying around to balance a fine line between composition and improvisation.

WRAITHS (Edinburgh, Aurora Borealis, At War With False Noise Records)
The wretched sound of the plague-ridden, the unclean and the befouled. Wraiths are the dead in their lime-pits and the dying in their beds. Wraiths are the horror of infection. Wraiths exclusively utilize found & re-structured equipment, location acoustics and human vocals. No computers or synthesizers are used in any Wraiths recording or live event. All Wraiths releases are recorded live and improvised, under ritual conditions.

Authors of a crunky, wobbly sound that’s fathoms deep, a lot of people are calling Mount Kimbie “post-dubstep”. Dubstep might be what they got together to make, but Mount Kimbie are making a sound creative and diverse enough that really they’re up with peers like Four Tet, Flying Lotus and Modeselektor now.

The live part of the show is very important for them, this isn’t laptops with a little LFO tweaking for extra liveness. In the main their astounding debut ‘Crooks and Lovers’ was recorded in single takes. Expect this to become apparent in the quality of the show.
