Independent Venue Week:
Brigid Mae Power

January 29th, 2019

Brigid Mae Power is an Irish singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who paints her songs in dreamily expansive strokes, transporting earthly compositions into universal and exultant realms.

“The Two Worlds churns like rough seas, Power’s voice veering between steely warning and piercing transcendence” – THE GUARDIAN

Her self-titled debut on Tompkins Square was a majestic suite of reverb-swathed laments for voice, guitar, piano, accordion, and harmonium, recorded at the Portland studio of key musical foil Peter Broderick. Themes include transformation, change, motherhood, acceptance, strength, courage and trust. In the words of Power, the album is about “trusting if you lose yourself or your way — you can come back”.

Upcoming album The Two Worlds is another masterful collection of effortless, affecting folk, and an album that furthers the songwriter and multi-instrumentalist’s already stellar reputation.

“The Two Worlds is Power’s most ambitious and her most introspective” – PITCHFORK

“The two worlds coexist beautifully here, the soft Power and the raw” – UNCUT

Live, Brigid can encapsulate the timeless magic of her songs either solo or as a duo with Peter. Thus far she has toured throughout Ireland, UK and the US together with artists including Lee Ranaldo, Richard Dawson, Alasdair Roberts, Peter Broderick and Ryley Walker, with performances at Le Guess Who? and TUSK festivals along the way.

Makeness plus Eyes of Others

January 28th, 2019

Makeness can be mapped to the vast, open hills of Scotland, and a desolate ridge of the same name where producer and songwriter Kyle Molleson arrived after a less-trodden path. His childhood was spent moving between Edinburgh, The Outer Hebrides and South West England, before an interest in music and technology in part led to a degree in Electronics at Leeds University. Here, playing bass in Glad Hand led to numerous trips north of the border to work on albums in the hillside studio he helped build.

Shan Fabulist – A Belated EP Launch Gig!

January 27th, 2019

Shan Fabulist: A singer-songwriter based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Shan started learning the piano at the age of 7, but shortly thereafter stopped taking lessons because he was “quite rubbish”. By the time he decided to write his first song 20 years later, Shan had settled on the guitar as his instrument of choice because it was “much easier”. In 2018, Shan wrote and recorded his debut musical release, a concept EP, entitled ‘V’ which explores themes relating to mental health and the impact of mental illness on relationships. ‘V’ was released on 06/12/2018 and received generally favourable reviews from Shan’s friends and family, “I’m probably a bit biased but think it sounds fab.” – Shan’s Mum.

Spooky Books: Layering arcane fingerstyle guitar below beautifully personal, yet catchy and uplifting melody lines. Spooky Books find a sonic space of his own, reminiscent of Ben Howard with the attitude of The Menzingers.

Jake Poynter: Commonly mistaken for a professional model because of his dashing good looks, Jake is actually a professional musician! He is a veteran of the Edinburgh music scene, playing in several bands through the years including Hold The Suspect, Scotia, and many more! Jake’s band credentials certainly show he’s a team player but for this gig he’s flying solo! We’ll see if he lives up to his CV – “I work well independantly or as part of a team!”

Take Today + WRTHLESS + THC DREAMS

January 25th, 2019

Take Today
“One of the hardest working new bands to break onto the Glasgow scene” – John Gilbert, G Note Events

“It’s only a matter of time, especially with what has been coming from the Take Today guys in the past year, it’s nothing short of brilliant” – New Hellfire Club Glasgow

FFO:- Biffy Clyro and Foo Fighters

WRTHLESS
4 piece pop-punk band from Scotland. Come get wavey.

FFO Neck Deep and Blink 182

THC Dreams
My life’s a porno. A joke turned mantra of the band. Inspired, like our music, by reality. From the salty taste in our mouths, left by the world of work, to getting smashed all the time. From daddy issues to love lost and found, THC Dreams has a finger on the throbbing, meaty pulse of a disenfranchised, apathetic sect of society. As 4 Bristol born and bred 20 somethings, unskilled and uneducated, feeling hopeless growing up in Tory Britain, our ears turned across the Atlantic. We were raised on a diet of Kerrang, Scuzz and emo; we barely avoided giving ourselves the big sweeping fringes. Spending our formative years in Bristol, a city with a vibrant musical history, opened us up to a vast array of genres. From DnB nights on Gloucester Road to UK hip hop blasting from house party sound systems, we have learned from and incorporated elements of the sounds that put our town on the musical map into our own brand of heavy, danceable emo.
