Neue Grafik Ensemble
FERNS
for fans of… Emma-Jean Thackray, Nubya Garcia, Yussef Dayes

May 13th, 2023

Composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Neue Grafik has been building strong rep for himself over the past few years, releasing records on labels such asRhythm Section, 22a, CoOp Presents and Wolf Music. His sound is a hybrid of jazz, house and hip hop, all with his unique geographical flavours of African ethnicity,Parisian roots and a love for London sounds like broken beat & grime thrown into the mix. Having been first properly introduced to the community of Total Refreshment Centre, home to London’s flourishing jazz scene, during an after-hours jam, it came to TRC founder Lex Blond in’s attention that Neue Grafik had some exquisite compositions of his own.

A few weeks later, it was decided that Neue Grafik would form a band — the Neue Grafik Ensemble(him on piano, rhodes and synths, Emma-Jean Thackray on trumpet, Vels Trio’s Dougal Taylor on drums and Matt Gedrych from Madd Addam on bass) — and that they would do their first gig at the now-closed venue of TRC, a week after the first day of rehearsals. No pressure… Then, the group got in the studio.

«Foulden Road», the EP taken from those sessions, came out in 2019 and featured Nubya Garcia, Emma-Jean Thackray, Brother Portrait and Allysha Joy to name a few. Neue Grafik is now setting to release

«Foulden Road Pt. II»—a new record entirely dedicated to Adama Traoré and Assa Traoré, their community and more largely to all Black people around the globe

Monsterwatch (Seattle)
SNASH
for fans of… Oh Sees, IDLES, black midi

May 12th, 2023

It’s hard not to think of Seattle’s halcyon days of logger fashion and furious riffs. But don’t call it a throwback, the trio may be using the same arsenal but they’re injecting it with a perspective that could only come from the modern era with their latest EP, Z O T.

Recorded by Steve Fisk (himself a grunge legend) and Arsen Gogeshvili, Z O T recontextualizes the sound Seattle first became famous for and injects with new youthful energy.

Live, the energy they infect into the room is palpable. The shrieking force of “I Don’t Get It” exudes disgust and worry through layers of fuzz, while “Lost My Car” plays to the idiosyncrasies and plights of big city life.

Mango Lounge & George IV present:
Oppidan

May 11th, 2023

Undoubtedly one of the fastest rising names in UK Garage, Oppidan has made a name for herself with her distinctive production style blending 2-step, 4×4 NUKG, hip-hop, soul, grime and UK bass influences.

At this relatively early stage of her career, she’s had releases on Night Bass, 24 Hour Garage Girls and Steppers Club as well as being an active part of Conducta’s Kiwi Rekord’s roster. She’s also established herself as a phenomenal DJ, playfully blurring the lines between UK garage, gunky, grime and house.

MEMORIALS
Verity Susman (Electrelane) + Matthew Simms (Wire)
Carsick Charlie
Cat’s Cradle

May 10th, 2023

MEMORIALS is the new band of Verity Susman (Electrelane’s frontwoman) and Matthew Simms (Wire,Better Corners, It Hugs Back, UUUU).As a duo these multi-instrumentalists cover plenty of ground onstage, juggling instruments in a set up resembling that of a 5-piece band. Their sound touches on the many points for which they are known, veering from melodic songwriting to psychedelic noise, free jazz freak outs, tape loops and drones, and then back again.
