Hotel Lux
Casual Drag
The Runaway Models
for fans of…Art Brut, The Wave Pictures, Yard Act and Parklife-era Blur

June 14th, 2023

Hotel Lux — completed by acerbic lead vocalist Lewis Duffin, guitarist Sam Coburn, drummer Craig MacVicar, and new members Max Oliver (guitar) and Dillon Home (organ; violin) — found themselves on the path to major success in 2020 around the release of the Barstool Preaching EP. Iggy Pop was singing their praises on the radio. The band decamped to TheWirral, nearLiverpool, where they found further inspiration in the marina, the local Morrisons and a producer and kindred spirit in BillRyder-Jones (TheCoral; ArcticMonkeys; YardAct)— who also contributed piano to the record. It was here that the band’s multi-faceted influences,£20 Casio keyboards and experimentation with omnichords, violins and marauding song structures finally fell into place. With rich emotional peaks matching the band’s signature self-effacing wit, and as many jangling guitars as there are squiggling organ hooks, the results have proven emphatic.

Lead single ‘Common Sense’ was influenced by ‘80s pop-rock group the Beautiful South, says Lewis. It was “are action against what was expected of us” that like wise recycles familiar themes of apathy and media criticism—previously touched upon in ‘TabloidNewspaper’. Inspired by the RMT strikes and trade union leader Mick Lynch, as well as the media’s treatment of Jeremy Corbyn, it’s an intricate and rhythmic and them full of funk bass, machine gun snares and clattering guitars reminiscent of Television or Glasgow indie icons Orange Juice. It’s undoubtedly the band’s most euphoric and danceable single to date

Stanley Brinks & Freschard
for fans of… Herman Düne, The Wave Pictures, The Moldy Peaches

June 13th, 2023

Singer of Herman Düne, Stanley Brinks has played here twice before with The Wave Pictures. He’ll get by with a little bit of you, alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, ephedrine and orange juice.

In 2004, Stanley Brinks and Freschard moved from Paris to Berlin, and quickly began making a name for themselves on the city’s music scene. They began issuing a steady stream of albums on CD-Rs, each of which bore similar photocopied duotone portrait covers, and backed by musicians from the Berlin and New York anti-folk scenes. They sought out off-circuit venues for live performances, and their off-kilter folk style stood out in techno-dominated, early ‘00s Berlin.

Eighteen years later, the duo are still going strong, building a sustainable career not by maximizing their business acumen, but by taking a different path—touring with friends, recording at home, and pursuing a business model based on community and pleasure rather than lucrative label deals. That freedom has allowed them to pursue their love of traveling, studying local music and incorporating the influence of calypso, Greek folk music, and Ethiopian melodic scales into their own music.

Acid Tongue
Big Lanes
for fans of… The Rolling Stones, “Let’s Dance”-era Bowie, T. Rex, Black Lips

June 12th, 2023

Guy Keltner, the primary songwriter for Acid Tongue, took a rough couple of years and turned them into libretto. “I became incredibly depressed and started spending a lot of time at the Arboretum in Seattle. I had just moved home and was spending all day absorbing this diversity of plants and sounds at the park. I poured myself into writing some deeply personal songs, heavily influenced by the artists in my immediate orbit.” During the recording of Arboretum, Keltner was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and decided to get sober from alcohol. “Kicking booze helped me focus in the studio, but I needed help finishing this album. I was incredibly fortunate to work with musicians that I actually listened to and enjoyed. They individually elevated each song to be something beautiful and unique.

The members of Seattle rock & roll outfit Acid Tongue are quite literally bouncing off the walls. In fact, it’s hard to even call them a “Seattle band”. There’s the core duo of songwriter Keltner and drummer/vocalist Ian Cunningham but with numerous touring and studio musicians scattered between Paris, New York, London, Mexico City, Los Angeles, & Austin, the rotating roster seems to grow larger by the day.. The band’s latest release, Arboretum, takes things in the next logical direction. Part glam-rock opus, part mixtape, this LP from Acid Tongue marks a significant step forward for a band well-versed in straddling the line between psychedelia and power-pop.

NANI
Grace and the Flat Boys
Hector Shaw

June 9th, 2023

NANI is an Edinburgh-based indie artist who makes mood-dependent alt-pop/rock/folk tunes for people who could never be in charge of the aux at a party cause they’re way too indecisive.

NANI has built a considerable catalogue of releases over the past few years and has been playing shows all over Scotland and beyond. Most notably King Tut’s Summer Nights, The Great Eastern Festival, Liverpool Sound City, and supporting acts such as Art School Girlfriend, Katie Gregson-Macleod, and Coach Party. Her 2020 release, the 6-track EP “Pure Frustration” has been met with critical acclaim and has received airplay on BBC Radio Scotland, Amazing Radio, and BBC 6 Music, with the track “Sunshine” being featured on BBC Introducing’s Hot List.

NANI’s most recent single “Search Bar” was released on the 17th of March and has already received praise from the likes of Resonate Scotland, The Skinny, and BBC Radio Scotland, with BBC Introducing host Shereen Cutty saying: “I think it’s such an incredibly clever concept. And she’s written an incredible song about it. There’s so much character in that song.” Her track “Limbo” (14th of April) served as a follow-up – a ballad telling the tale of a never-ending situation-ship. Both these songs hint at the sound of NANI’s upcoming EP, “Honey”, which will be out on the 9th of June and accompanied by a headline show at one of Edinburgh’s most iconic venues, Sneaky Pete’s.
