BLACK RAT DEATH SQUAD + UNKNOWN HAGANA + THE PARTY PROGRAM

May 22nd, 2009

Black Rat Death Squad (****). Big riffs, bigger solos and enormous fun as the singer hops across the bar top to give a theatrical, snarling, faux-misogynistic performance. Throwing themselves into the healthy crowd again and again, the Death Squad top off a weird and wonderful evening’s fun

HJALTALIN + BENNI HEMM HEMM + ST JUDES INFIRMARY

May 17th, 2009

“They are that rare thing: a band who arrive unheralded, unknown, and ensnare you instantly. Sleepdrunk Seasons sounds as if it was made for one reason only: to revel in the joy of making music.” – The Sunday Times  “A touch Arcade fire but more interesting, vocals are stunning, instrumentation is awesome. Joyous and gentle. Big colourful band to fall in love with. Soul, classical. Classoul.” – Huw Stephens, BBC Radio 1  “What makes Hjaltalin ooze with potential, and more importantly, sound nothing like any of their revered countrymen at all is their unflinching knack at being able to craft both winsome pop tunes alongside audaciously experimental arrangements with seemingly effortless ease.” – Drowned in Sound  “This is playful, frisky music that sounds like an endless summer night among friends, sliding from euphoria to melancholy and back again, lush with longing and promise. If the richness at times threatens to overwhelm, then the singing of Hogni Egilsson provides the grit that produces the pearl.” – Guardian  “The Icelandic collective’s UK debut is cheeky and breezy – like fresh air in London, like the sound of the morning thaw” – Plan b

*HJALTALIN PLAY SNEAKY PETES ON SUNDAY MAY 17th. TICKETS AVAILABLE NOW FROM ticketweb.co.uk + Ripping*

Volume!

May 16th, 2009

Starting two years ago in Ego’s dingy Cocteau Lounge (RIP), Volume! were one of Scotland’s first clubs to take Dubstep seriously, and they’re still Edinburgh’s most authentic vision of the genre. This will be a Residents Special – something we’re really looking forward to! Though they’ve hosted the biggest names in and around the dubstep scene (Skream, Benga, Neil Landstrumm, Caspa, Rustie), their own sets are always extra special, bringing in elements of Grime, DnB, Jungle, B’More, Baile Funk, Aqua Crunk, and everything else room-shaking. And yes, once again we’ve managed to make this a FREE SHOW!

HEALTHY MINDS COLLAPSE + THE VALKARYS + JADED PLAYBOY + DAVE?

May 15th, 2009

Demonstrating that gritty rock doesn’t need to be accompanied by baggy t-shirts and greasy hair, Healthy Minds Collapse represent a new breed of thoughtful heavyweights. Amidst their powerful grizzle, a strong attention to melody reveals a softer side to their record collections – The Cure and The Kinks slipping in cosily and comfortably between Nirvana, Fugazi and the Sex Pistols. This appreciation for melody and strong vocals sets them staunchly apart from the pack.

HEALTHY MINDS COLLAPSE HEADLINE SNEAKY PETES ON MAY 15th. SUPPORT FROM THE VALKARYS + JADED PLAYBOY

AMAZING BABY + THE MARVELS + 19 FOLDS

May 11th, 2009

One of 2009’s best new bands. Emerging from the buzzing Brooklyn scene, AMAZING BABY play their debut show in the capital on MAY 11th.

“Brooklynite psych pop collective Amazing Baby are an impossibly good looking bunch of neo-hippies that operate a revolving door policy on membership. They’ve already conjured a whole sack of huge and skewed dreamscapes, and with the likes of ‘Head Dress’ and ‘Supreme Being’ they’ve got enough dreamy credentials to float to MGMT-esque adoration.”
