Mannequin Pussy, Zed Penguin

June 10th, 2017

Brevity is among Mannequin Pussy’s strengths, but a controlled volatility is the Philadelphia quartet’s calling card. The mood of any given song can zap with a disconcerting swiftness from the playful to the chaotic. This dynamic persists on record and on stage. [Read more →]

Guadalupe Plata, Lonesome Shack

June 6th, 2017

“Our name comes from our hometown’s patron, the Virgin of Guadalupe —she protects us as we play the devil’s music,” say the members of Guadalupe Plata, with not a little bit of hopefulness.

Rising up from the town of Úbeda, deep in Andalusia near Jaén, Guadalupe Plata have become legends for their provocative, deeply affecting blues and boogie music, creating a psychedelic landscape that is as darkly surrealistic as it is infectious.

Firecracker Recordings ‘Heal Yourself & Move’ #9 with Whodamanny, House Of Traps

June 3rd, 2017

In an era when dance music gets weird as hell, Whodamanny, AKA Raffaele Arcella (Periodica/Earlysounds/Unthank), still cuts an odd figure. The Neapolitan is a key player in the Early Sounds Recordings collective and one of the founders of the Periodica Records. He’s also half of The Normalmen and one third of The Mystic Jungle Tribe. He’s spent a great deal of time experimenting with phase distortion synthesizers made by Casio and on several kinds of toy keyboards creating a really weird fusion between cosmic sounds, proto-house, jazz-funk and electronica. The results can be heard best on 2016’s Cosmic Morphology album on Periodica and on his Primaria Industria opus our own Unthank label, with House Of Traps (Firecracker/Unthank).

Heaters, Joshua Gray, Mad Gerald

May 30th, 2017

One of the best live bands we hosted in 2016 are back with a new record.

Heaters, from Grand Rapids, Michigan, have a spacey, driving take on West Coast psych rock. Tapping into both the twang of their ’60s garage compatriots and building their own brand of expansive, cosmic swells, Pitchfork calls the band “catchy and kinetic,” noting their “energy and hook writing are clearly on point.” Combining a seemingly constant output of “reverb-coated, fuzz-studded, hard-driven garage psych” with a kaleidoscopic, hip-shaking live set, Heaters are quickly forging something new and exciting.
