New album on Sub Pop Records June 2024. Ryan Kattner has always embodied a wild-man pied-piper vibe: his melodic, art-rock output just unhinged enough that it was at once intriguing and angsty. He was so alluringly creative that you went along with it, even if you were never sure where Man Man would take you. Carrot on Strings is no less inventive, but its ethos is radical in context of the band’s two-decade, idiosyncratic career.
“Art is an extension of my psyche. It’s not about how I define myself or want to be perceived necessarily. It’s how I have learned to translate the palpitations of my heart.”
This months Volens Chorus continues on from our packed dance with Jawnino, inviting yet another Rap artist Psweatpants. The Zangwills took the stage by storm Gigsandtours
Everyone is singing, smiling, jumping and bouncing. Even at the very back it’s completely wild All Music Magazine
A refreshing set of indie tunes that stand out from the mundane jangles of landfill bollocks Louder Than War
The Zangwills met at 6th form college in Cheshire and have been releasing music steadily since. Their last singleWalking on a Wire was produced by Gordon Raphael (The Strokes) and they are currently working towards their debut album.
Each member brings very different influences to the band & that, along with Jake Vicker’s unique voice is reflected in their distinctive, instantly recognisable sound.
A charismatic band with a reputation for strong live performances which tend to sell out in advance.
The video for their song Judas on the Dancefloor was produced by Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) & won Best International Music Video at Focus Wales Film Festival.
I’ve fallen head over heels in love with this band Eclectic Music Lover (USA)
‘Like nothing else out there, an immensely valuable quality when so many bands disappear into a slurry of sameness’ Getintothis
Elton John has built a reputation on this kind of track. Harry Styles landed a bloomin’ Mercury nomination for this kind of track. The Zangwills warrant similar attention Louder Than War (on Backpatters & Shooters)
First in our double-header November are DJ Cablecar and Al Gu, two local menaces who are no stranger to a sheller or two. Both have turned our heads and won our hearts in recent times with their explosive take on hi-NRG dance, good nature, and undeniable passion for music.
As well as being devilishly dangerous deejays, both run some of the most forward thinking and exciting parties in the country – Berlin transplant Slainthe Mhath and Highland sensation baile/baile respectively.
Expect some furious b2b action, whooping and hollering as they join us in the booth, Wed November 6th at Sneaky Pete’s – where else?
Rosali makes songs that take their time in revealing their full power. What might appear to be restrained, introspective compositions will stretch slowly outward, snagging your attention with a sideways guitar lead or an exceptionally raw lyric you didn’t catch the first time around. Her softly glowing music is deceptively fluid, able to appear patient and refined at the edge of unraveling.
Feu de garde is not about devastation. Carefully tended by the bibis, the flames bring light, comfort, life. The embers transmit energy, and their warmth protects us against frostbite as a harsh winter finally comes to an end. Deep in the forest, near a river or beneath the 40 overpass, communal power unfolds in all of its vastness, then bursts into thousands of tiny sparks, into melodies as festive as they are insightful. Dizzying spells, mysteries and transformations make up the mesmerizing journey that is Feu de garde, which reaches out to those they have met along the way and to the road itself, however dangerous. The duo formed by Adèle Trottier-Rivard and Nicolas Basque explore emotional and physical territories, overcoming obstacles with intense, raw yet benevolent radicalism. A former member of the very first exclusively female scout group, les Guides, Adèle reconnects with the values that made her who she is: courage, perseverance, sisterhood, friendship. The years she spent in that community, discovering nature and developing intense relationships, became part of her identity and informed her writing, all the way to the creation of Feu de garde. The influence of Moondog, Stereolab, and, more than ever, Suicide can be heard in the direct, singular approach of the album, which also features group chants inspired by Girl Guide outings in the woods.
Harsh things become magical as the duo transforms them into lyrics. The concrete dust that fills the city air turns into bright sparks that rekindle childhood glee. Pushing back the boundaries of genres and letting their creativity run free, Bibi Club fill Feu de garde with relentless rhythms. On stage Adèle grabs percussion instruments and takes risks. Liberated, seductive, undeniable. In the crowd bodies are moving, floating, dancing the night away.
Fair Weather Son (Mark Ellis) is a UK Singer, producer and BMG published songwriter who has been writing and performing for 20 years. His last release 38 Years (4,500 Spotify streams) received national radio play on BBC Scotland and made it’s way on to Amazing Radio’s Best In Country playlist among many others. Jim Gellatly of Amazing Radio called it “Timeless Americana and New Wave with Elvis Costello vibes.”
Releasing his self-produced EP in 2020, the lead single This Thing Is Better later received radio play on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire and Cambridge 105 and inspired award winning director Jonnie Howard to animate a video which generated over 14,000 views on YouTube.
Hailing from Barcelona, Dame Area has left audiences speechless and breathless all around Europe, playing almost 200 shows in the last couple of years and generating a consensus: they are one of the best live acts of the moment.
Only in 2023 they have played festivals such as Atonal, Nuits Sonores, Dour, Grauzone, Fusion, etc…and legendary clubs like Tresor, Apolo, Spook Factory, leaving the lasting impression that few electronic acts are as direct and in-your-face as this Catalan/Italian duo.
Their discography doesn’t reflect completely what their current live performance is about: an intense industrial and percussive aair which is going to be captured on their next LP (which is set for release in 2024 on Mannequin Records). To enter Dame Area’s universe you need to see them on stage: setlists are changing at every show, songs are being modified live and the experience is always unique.
Still you can dive into their varied discography: they have released in excellent forward thinking labels like Mannequin Records, BFE, Kess Kill or their own imprint Màgia Roja (described by The Quietus as “Spain’s most extreme and most important label-slash-venue”). It may give you some hints, although listening to just one release won’t give you an exact clue: an eclectic, discerning form of contemporary industrial music, deploying compulsive minimal synth and primal polyrhythms, as well as uniquely reconstrued elements of post-punk & EBM. An artistic identity that embraces influence yet eschews compromise, changing flavours, but not essence, from release to release
