Pale Blue Eyes are a young electro-modernist guitar group based in Devon in Britain’s southwest. Uncut – “Joyous… propulsive… exhilarating.”

Man On Man
The Twistettes (acoustic)
for fans of… Faith No More, Big Joanie, Perfume Genius

November 9th, 2023

MAN ON MAN’s triumphant and pop-powered return, Provincetown is the result of an accidental band moving with sudden intention and two once-new partners growing into a deeper relationship. Written largely in that tip-of-the-Cape haven that gives the record its name, Provincetown cavorts even as it poses complicated questions about what it means to be queer, alive, and in love in the first quarter of this anxious American century. There are peppy hookup-app blues, queer history lessons set to contagious electroclash, unfettered celebrations of sex and summertime fun—glitter bombs all, set off to light up these often-dark times. “Windows down, let ’em see/We’ve got nothing to hide,” they sing during the enormous and insistent “I Feel Good,” boldly answering the title’s refrain with “I feel great/In these United States.” It is, like all of Provincetown, a massive rainbow flag in the ground—not a statement of existence so much as a proclamation of defiant thriving. Cum, if you will, and take it.

Pearl & The Oysters
The Raeburn Brothers
Disco Mary
for fans of… Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Stereolab, Metronomy

November 7th, 2023

Juliette Pearl Davis and Joachim Polack aren’t just musical collaborators – they’re also life partners. As Pearl & the Oysters, they make songs that speak to eclectic tastes in music and pop culture; as Juju and Jojo, they’re kindred spirits. What began as a high-school friendship in Paris blossomed into a creative and personal relationship that has spanned decades and continents.

In another life, Juliette and Joachim made pop music in Paris but when the opportunity arose, the pair skipped town for the U.S. After four years immersed in the open-minded DIY scene of Gainesville, Florida, Pearl & The Oysters headed to Los Angeles, where they connected with local artists and finished up Coast 2 Coast.

Coast 2 Coast draws on this experience for its colorful cocktail of sounds: the swamps of Florida and sandy L.A. beaches under a mirrorball sun; a radio picking up a faraway broadcast before tuning into an oldies pop station; crashing waves that melt into the sound of Juliette’s white noise machine.

Guests on the album include Lætitia Sadier (Stereolab), Riley Geare (Unknown Mortal Orchestra), Alan Palomo (Neon Indian), Dent May, and Alex Brettin (Mild High Club). Coast 2 Coast documents Juliette and Joachim’s move across the U.S. and the unfamiliar feeling of being settled, having found a “sense of ‘home’ in one another.”

Matthew & The Atlas
at The Caves

November 5th, 2023

Morning Dancer is the third album from Matthew and the Atlas, the project led by British songwriter Matt Hegarty. Across Hegarty’s first two LPs (‘Other Rivers’ and ‘Temple’) and the four stripped back EPs that preceded and followed them, he has traversed a range of musical territories from classic acoustic folk, to dramatic synth-laden electronica, and urgent guitar led alt-rock. The common thread has been a songwriting style that marries a subtle melodic sensibility with lyrics full of natural imagery and dark emotional heft – all delivered in his striking and distinctive vocal.

In the process Hegarty has quietly built a major cult following in Europe and the US. Armed with a collection of new songs in the second half of 2018, Hegarty found his way to Bristol based producer Ali Chant (Perfume Genius, Youth Lagoon, Gruff Rhys). They clicked immediately, and recorded and mixed Morning Dancer in an intensive six week stint, which saw Hegarty recording for the first time with his full five-piece touring band. The record has familiar elements – the energy and intensity of the live show, stripped and delicate confessional moments, and touches of the synth heavy drama that characterized his debut. To that mix, Chant and Hegarty have added flourishes of brass and woodwind and a playful looseness to the production and arrangements that takes the songs and Hegarty’s voice to a new place altogether.
