Independent Venue Week 2020
Maranta + Fourth Daughter + SMUT.

January 28th, 2020

Independent Venue Week is a great excuse for us to showcase the best upcoming Edinburgh acts. Tickets are cheap for this show at £5+booking fee, since we really want to encourage you to come out and see how good these bands are.

Electronic pop duo Maranta – band are particular favourites of ours. You may have seen them play the perfect counterpoint to Free Love at Summerhall last summer.

Fourth Daughter is the project of Scottish Electropop artist Emily Atkinson (formerly known as E M I L I E), and this is her debut show! She’s been working on a superb new record with Dave from Stillhound, and we’ve spotted Fergus from Bwani Junction playing bass in her new video so we’ve a feeling there could be an all-star cast on stage for this show – here’s hoping.

SMUT. is a singer, writer, producer and musician with a grunge background taking an increasingly electronic direction with her music. Formerly performing solely with a guitar, she now also sings to hip hop and r&b instrumentals created by either herself or other collaborative artists. Although varied with her musical creations, a vulnerable and raw approach to creative expression defines much of SMUT.’s work

Independent Venue Week 2020
Kettle of Kites + Kapil Seshasayee

January 27th, 2020

KETTLE OF KITES is an indie art rock band. It’s a soaring crescendo and then a simple folk melody. It’s a vast wide open space and then an intimate living room – a geometric maze to find your way through.

Their debut album Loan was formed through humble means – recorded in a dingy, sweaty Italian basement by Scottish frontman/songwriter Tom Stearn and then sent half way across the world to A Pocket Full Of Stones studio in Australia to be mixed. Embarking on the launch of their new sci-fi inspired studio album Arrows, the band’s somewhat dispersed members (Pietro Martinelli, bass – Genoa // Marco Giongrandi, guitar – Brussels // Riccardo Chiaberta, drums – London) combine their unique experience in their respective music scenes to sculpt new worlds, new images, new stories.

Their soon to be released second album Arrows is inspired by the sci-fi world of the author Isaac Asimov – Sumptuous Fleet Foxes- esque sunsets, roaring Grizzly Bear reverbs and cyclic classical guitar lines, with an undercurrent of minimal electronic drums and synth reminiscent of Radiohead.

KAPIL SESHASAYEE is a polymath, and a true original talent, both as a songwriter and as a soundsmith, a one man combination of Scott Walker, Mark Hollis, Arca and Richard Dawson, creating something wholly unique. Combining electronica flourishes evoking FKA Twigs with Indian Classical guitar ornamentations, stunning vocals and a penchant for unorthodox instrumentation such as the aquaphone, Kapil manages to be truly experimental yet still accessible.

Building on the momentum of his acclaimed debut ‘A Sacred Bore’ – featured in Pitchfork, VICE, BBC Introducing, The Guardian, The Quietus & Rolling Stone India, Scottish polymath Kapil Seshasayee makes an eclectic shift away from his experimental roots towards a Psychedelic crossover of RnB & Avant Indian Classical evocative of Solange, FKA Twigs and Ananda Shankar on his latest album, “The Item Girl” – out now.

The Return of…
Giant Drag + very special guest

January 26th, 2020

We are over the moon to host the most unexpected return of one of the coolest bands we’ve ever loved. PLUS there will be a very special guest performance from a well known Scottish artist to happens to be a massive Giant Drag fan.

The dreamy-but-tough indie rock of L.A.’s Giant Drag is the brainchild of singer/guitarist Annie Hardy, whose knowing lyrics and washes of guitar suggest a mix of My Bloody Valentine, the Breeders, PJ Harvey, and Mazzy Star. She’s so cool we love her!

January 23rd, 2020

BASIL PANAGOP
BEE SINGH + LONELY CARP

This year has brought Nova a nomination in the Best Hip Hop Category of the Scottish Alternative Music Awards 2019, features in Mixmag, Red Bull Music, The Skinny, Time Out London, The Basement x Nike BSMNT AIR MAX 90 campaign, the launch of her club night Potential Party and the announcement of her forthcoming solo album, Re-Up.

To be continued…
