Malojian + Mandy Bingham + Burnt Paw

February 18th, 2020

Malojian is the solo project for weird pop troubadour Steven Scullion. He’s worked with some of indie music’s brightest and best – including legendary producer Steve Albini.

2020 sees the release of his 5th album – a collaboration with Grandaddy’s Jason Lyttle, which developed from his tour support on Jason’s solo piano tour in 2019 (including a sold out show at St Augustine’s Church in Edinburgh).

Steven’s wry, perceptive lyrics, sense of humour and love for an off-kilter melody has garnered praise from 6 Music, Mojo and Q magazine.

“evokes such rich emotions” 8/10 MOJO Magazine

“I absolutely love his music… just beautiful” Cerys Matthews, BBC 6 Music

“achingly beautiful” Q Magazine

Mandy Bingham

Being the daughter of Irish folk legend David McWilliams (Days of Pearly Spencer) may be big shoes to fill, but Mandy Bingham’s own songwriting lives up to the family name. She’s carved out a sound and voice of her own, yet still retain the folk tradition.

Burnt Paw

James Brute + Fawkes

February 16th, 2020

James Brute writes spooked out songs of love, loss and lust and delivers them in a heady mix of acid blues, doom-wop and rock n’roll.

The former frontman of The Brute Chorus released the a cappella single Bury Yourself in 2014 with long-term collaborator Mat Martin. The single got picked up by John Kennedy on XFM and garnered a range of press including the NME.

Shows followed in support of Nadine Shah, Kingsley Chapman and the Murder, John J Presley, Furs and Big Girls alongside legendary basement parties in Homerton under the old Railroad Café.

As the sound became more expansive he began to build his band, now featuring Dave Ferrett (Bass, Vocals & Percussion), Johnny Manning (Keyboards and percussion) and Findlay William Brown (Drums).

HMLTD + SPQR at Opium

February 15th, 2020

“Anyone concerned with the absence of theatrics in rock’n’roll should pop their head into a HMLTD show” – The Guardian

Following their recent return with the explosive recent single
‘LOADED’, London based five piece HMLTD today announce news of the upcoming release of their long-awaited debut album, West of Eden, due for release on 7th February 2020 via UK independent label Lucky Number.

The expansive, labyrinthine debut has been several years in the making; a daring collection of songs created to incite conversation about proposed new visions of masculinity, the decadence of western capitalism and the violence of insecurity and repression. Across its 15 tracks, the band’s artistic vision is realised in full technicolour, with all shades of their sonic palette used to create an album that is equal parts lush and abrasive.

En Attendant Ana (Trouble in Mind) + Irma Vep & Buffet Lunch

February 10th, 2020

Good Grief Presents:

En Attendant Ana
(Paris – Trouble In Mind Records)

With the release of Juillet, Parisian quintet En Attendant Ana make good on the promise of their album Lost & Found (2018, Trouble In Mind), diligently crafting a set of ten songs that shimmer, glide and sway with a sophistication only hinted at by their debut.

Recorded by Vincent Hivert and Alexis Fugain over the course of one week at Studio Claudio, an isolated studio in rural France, Juillet is the sound of a band reshaping itself, adapting to numerous transitions both within the band (‘Juillet’ is the first recording with current guitarist Maxence Tomasso) and in life. Primary lyricist & front person Margaux Bouchaudon says “I tend to consider it as a journey towards acceptation of losses (would they be friends, lovers or dreams through death, departure or disillusion…) but also towards self respect and independence.” Indeed many of the songs on Juillet feel hopeful, despite their melancholic tone, lacing a lilting melody or triumphant trumpet swell (courtesy of multi-instrumentalist Camille Fréchou) or charging guitar riffs from Tomasso or Bouchaudon. Famed French engineer Dominique Blanc-Francard mastered the whole affair with a deft hand, coaxing the subtleties of the mix without sacrificing its sonic wallop.
