Hallan, the electrifying quartet hailing from Portsmouth, is back with their brand-new single, “Lilian’s Regret.” Known for their sharp lyricism and electrifying energy, the band’s latest release is set to captivate listeners with its compelling narrative and dynamic soundscape.

“Lilian’s Regret” showcases Hallan’s signature blend of razor-sharp guitar riffs, pulsating rhythms, and evocative storytelling. The track delves into themes of reflection, consequence, and the poignant weight of decisions, painting a vivid picture of its titular character’s emotional journey. With hauntingly raw vocals and a driving instrumental backdrop, the single perfectly encapsulates the band’s knack for pairing intensity with introspection.

A Word from Hallan:

“With questionable events happening in the world today, the question to pose is ‘where is empathy?’ After watching the show ‘World’s Toughest Prisons’, songwriter Conor Clements was particularly drawn to an episode examining the life of Lilian, a murderer housed in a Moldovan prison. The episode humanises Lilian, throwing a spotlight on his thoughts, regrets, and beliefs. Lilian experiences poor living conditions, living in a small concrete room with a 32-step corridor being his only choice of exercise. He has no access to open air and his only refuge is a small karaoke set he keeps under his bed. Despite being a well-mannered and likeable man, it is later in the episode that his violent and abhorrent crimes are revealed.

‘Lilian’s Regret’ examines the complexity of human emotion and regretful action, a song which asks the listener to consider the fundamental question: ‘does everyone deserve forgiveness?’ The single also encourages discussion around the conditions of international prisoners and reflection on current criminal justice systems’ ability to observe and acknowledge authentic rehabilitation.

‘Lilian’s Regret’ is a thought-provoking reminder that although we must never forget the past, perhaps reform and hope can be found even in the darkest of places. The song has been recognised by Netflix presenter (and Founder of The Raphael Rowe Foundation) Raphael Rowe, and he has since visited Lilian’s prison to personally play him the song.” Emerging from Portsmouth’s vibrant music scene, Hallan has quickly established themselves as one of the most exciting bands in the UK’s post-punk landscape. Hallan has earned widespread acclaim from music press including Loud & Quiet, The Line of Best Fit, Dork, Clash, and CRACK Magazine. Their music has also found a home on BBC Radio 6 Music, where they received significant airplay, including a Maida Vale session and an extended run on the station’s A-list playlist. Jack Saunders of BBC Radio 1 calls them “Portsmouth’s finest,” while Steve Lamacq of BBC 6 Music praises them as “one of the more interesting and colourful purveyors of this modern age agit-pop.”
