It’s difficult to pin a label on Franco-Mexican Balency except as part of an international wave of artists fashioning a very modern pop music from elements of R ‘n’B , dubstep and garage (or the “twisted R&B-sung-by-cutely-breathy females scene” as The Guardian called it). Gilles Peterson, Mount Kimbie and James Blake are confirmed fans and Balency has collaborated with Balency’s associate Airhead, while Mount Kimbie will feature on her debut album. Oh yes, and she’s also supported The Cure on a stadium tour of Mexico! The ‘Walls’ EP was released in June to widespread acclaim, and a remix EP (featuring returning French synth-wave hero Colder) followed in October.

Brothers Nicolas and Fabrice Laureau founded the influential Prohibited label nearly 25 years ago, initially to release music by their own hardcore group Prohibition. Since then, they’ve evolved with drummer Mitch into an instrumental powerhouse, drawing on the grooves of Can and Afrobeat, Tropicalia, psychedelia and modern electronic productions and dreaming up new soundtracks for films including Eisenstein’s Que Viva Mexico!. The ‘Three Dances’ EP, featuring a remix by Turzi, was released in June and previewed on The Quietus while the album Pink Renaissance – their most accessible to date – is out in the UK on 29th September.

Oui Love is about exciting French artists touring the UK with support from bureauexport (the French music export office) & the Institut Français. Oui Love launched in 2009 with a breakout 12-date tour of the UK showcasing the best up- and-coming French music to UK audiences and has since featured the likes of Jupiter, Housse de Racket, Team Ghost and Anoraak.

With Oui Love, the bureauexport and the Institut Français want to demonstrate that the depth of French talent runs far deeper than marquee names like Phoenix, M83, Justice or Woodkid, and the Oui Love tours put French artists on the road, allowing them to connect with audiences the length and breadth of the UK. Oui Love also aims to team French acts up with emerging young British talent – for example 2010 saw Oui Love promote an extremely successful tour of the UK featuring French bands The Shoes, Bewitched Hands on the Top of Our Heads, Revolver and Curry & Coco, along with English student bands Bella Diem and Jimi’s Parade.
