Making rumbling rock and grimy grunge that’s as malevolent as a midnight knife fight, their sound is equal parts Kyuss and Sleater-Kinney, with a dash of Babes In Toyland for extra punch. Lola Hammerich (vocals/guitar), Andrea Thuesen (vocals/guitar) and Benedicte Pierleoni (drums) are a trio not to be messed with.

Baby In Vain are not your typical Scandinavian indie band. Drawing on the gang-mentality and bluesy swagger of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Queens Of The Stone Age, they’ve been together six years, but are still quite young; Lola’s 19, Benedicte is 21 and Andrea 22. Their early material saw them producing their own twist on stoner-rock, but over the past five years they’ve branched out into much broader territory, pulling in the industrial menace of post-punk alongside fuzzy expeditions into the fringes of doom and garage punk.

Unfurling out of Los Angeles this July comes St. Catherine, Matt Mondanile’s fifth outing as Ducktails, following his previous work as guitarist for Real Estate.

The new album emerges from the roots of Mondanile’s previous work, from the free-form, ambient bedroom experiments of seminal underground release Landscapes (2009), to 2013’s eighties pop re-imagination The Flower Lane, but ultimately moves Ducktails on to a more refined, personal and sincere place.

St. Catherine is a finely-honed collection of baroque pop songs that take the blissful, cascading melodic fretwork that Mondanile has made his signature with both Ducktails and his other band, Real Estate, and applies it to songs of considerable new emotional heft and dynamic range.

The result is fittingly romantic, mysterious and celestial – a dizzying, awe-struck listen replete with strange lyrical images and seductive melodies that are alluring and foreboding in equal measure.

The Julia Holter-featuring “Church” and “Heaven’s Room”, tracks which see Mondanile flex his muscles as a composer and arranger, introducing complex, interlocking vocal harmonies, gorgeously sweeping string parts (provided by Andrew Tholl and Christopher Votex) and a host of off-kilter electronic elements into his sonic palate – channeling the likes of Broadcast, and Stereolab but with a younger wide eyed sensibility.

Dead Pretties are deranged… wild-eyed, unpredictable presence, magnetic, unhinged and chaotic. What makes Dead Pretties really exciting, though, is something more – a knack for being able to distill the good, the bad and the ugly of the world we’re inhabiting right now in sharp social commentary.

He’s been praised by BBC Introducing, Noise Collective NYC, Beatlebabe Reviews and others as outstanding, soothing, lyrically captivating and soulful. Over the years he has gained a loyal fan base who have helped him raise funds to fly to NYC and record his debut album with producer Aaron Nevezie (The Black Keys, Danger Mouse, Jojo Mayer & Nerve) at The Bunker Studio who also helped him record his first EP. He repaid the fans who helped raise the funds with 2 weeks of exclusive private shows.
