August 17th, 2019

Uela uelaaaaaa! The Club Medi luxury cruise liner docks in at Sneaky Pete’s for a special 5am Festival edition, where Andrea Montalto (aka DJ Kalimba de Luna) steps in with good pal and rival digger Joseph Russelll.

Don’t let the name fool you, Joseph is originally from Napoli and long-time member of the city’s famous Early Sounds crew. Now based in London, he runs the party Sweetnighter out of notorious jazz hotspots brilliant corners and NT’s Loft.

When these guys get together, they set the place on fire! Leave all flammables at the door and prepare to sweat.

Popular Music: Madonna’s New York

August 15th, 2019

A nineteen year-old Madonna moved to NYC in 1978. It was the home of Talking Heads, Arthur Russell, Blondie, Grace Jones, John Lennon, Steve Reich, Chic, Larry Levan, Z Records, Afrika Bambaataa, Suicide, Richard Hell, Keith Haring, Warhol and Basquiat, Studio 54, Paradise Garage, The Loft, CBGB’s, The Stonewall Inn… and Madonna’s dance tutor Martha Graham.

David Byrne has written about ‘scenius’ and how great music tends to come from scenes rather than geniuses working alone. Madonna arrived into the most extraordinary music and art scene, and though she made pop music, she did it in a more snotty, arty and punk way than pretty much anyone since.

We’ll be playing music from New York from the end of the 70’s and the early 80s, and a whole load of Madonna especially the early stuff. Why listen to anything else?
