Phoebe Green
Nell Mescal
at the Mash House
for fans of… Soccer Mommy, Confidence Man

November 19th, 2022

Phoebe Green dares to confront her reflection, holding the mirror up to her face so closely she can see her breath on it. Who’s there? A shock of tangerine curls which earned her the childhood moniker of ‘Shirley Temple of the north’; eyes painted with strokes of lime green; right hand inked with the constant reminder: Lucky Me.

For years, the singer-songwriter has been circling the surface, refining her own story through the stories of others, filtered through a prism of experience that always allowed her to hold herself at a safe, controllable remove. Since her first project 02:00AM, released as a teenager on the cusp of adulthood, Green has found it easier to blend, chameleon-like, into the colours the world expects to see, hiding under a blanket of dreamy, guitar-led indie-pop.

But now, as a woman of 24, she is no longer content to conform. With the release of her debut record Lucky Me, at last, we find Phoebe. “This record has got way more to do with my relationship with myself – and therefore with other people – rather than being completely external,” she shares. “I’m really dissecting my behaviour and asking why I actively enable myself to fall into certain habits.”

Across 13 acts, it’s a frustrated self-interrogation, blinding herself with torchlight to extract explanations for her own behaviours, contradictions and complexities – but through this process of knowing herself, she arrives at a place of peace and self-forgiveness.

GK Machine
Kris Wasabi
Pako Vega

November 18th, 2022

GK Machine has been pursuing his numerous artistic ventures for the better part of two and a half decades. Currently operating Invisible Inc records since 2015, the label specialises in psychedelic oddities catering towards aficionados of something a little more cosmic. The label has received support from Andrew Weatherall, Trevor Jackson, Cosmo Vitelli, Joakim, Optimo, John Talabot, Ivan Smagghe, Prins Thomas, Jane Fitz, Hugo Capablanca, Manfredas, Alexis Le-Tan, Autarkic and many more.

GK Machine has himself been DJing in clubs, bars, illegal raves, boat parties and secluded beaches for more than half his life…each set different from the last. January 2022 marked his 27th anniversary of getting behind the decks. He’ll be back to the sweat-box for a psychedelic extravaganza with local legend Kris Wasabi to play together for the second time in their career.

Kris Wasabi ran his notorious club, Wasabi Disco for 10 years in Sneaky Pete’s and brought the Edinburgh debuts of Young Marco, Wolf Muller, DJ Fett Burger and DJ Sotofett to the club – as well as live sets from RAMZi and Octo Octa! Kris Terminated Wasabi Disco in 2018, we are delighted to have him return to his spiritual home!

Pako Vega, Aquelarre resident and head of the mysterious label Sounds Of Ogigia, will be warming up the night with a selection of evocative cosmic sounds on another night for curious minds.

Archives & Stand B-Side:
ABSOLUTE.

November 17th, 2022

Mixmag cover artist ABSOLUTE. graduated from a key figure in the vibrant LGBTQ+ club space (promoting influential events Super Electric Party Machine & WUT?CLUB), into a DJ, producer, and live artist in the spotlight of international electronic music.

He has DJed at a wide array of parties and festivals from Glastonbury and Creamfields to Fabric and Razzmatazz. His key supporters range from Pete Tong, who crowned ‘String Theory his Essential New Tune, to an ever expanding array of tastemakers including Maya Jane Coles, The Blessed Madonna, Annie Mac and beyond. Alongside his musical accomplishments, ABSOLUTE. (Anthony McGinley) is a passionate activist for human rights and has a longstanding track record of work supporting issues including climate, race, and LGBTQ+ justice.

After attending the first Extinction Rebellion action in London, McGinley wrote ‘Rave Against the Machine’, a track that sampled a speech by Greta Thunberg which resulted in XR later inviting him to programme the music line-up of their International Rebellion at Trafalgar Square, while at Glastonbury, he played at Greenpeace’s Rave Tree.

Next month sees the release of Anthony’s debut mixtape Wonderland – a whirlwind ride through dance music as heard through ABSOLUTE.’s ears: emotive house, hard-edged techno, divine disco, and euphoric rave bring the party, while more cerebral downtempo and textural ambient tracks wind things down.

It’s party music for a time without parties, all shot through with McGinley’s message of hope and equality for all. Anthony will be taking Wonderland on the road in June with his headline live show at Islington’s Assembly in partnership with underground gatekeepers Percolate. Tickets are available via the RA website.

Randolph’s Leap

November 17th, 2022

Randolph’s Leap make pop music for unpopular people. The 8-piece group, led by songwriter Adam Ross, combine buoyant energy and catchy melodies with tenuous rhyming couplets, self-deprecating, humorous lyrics and unexpected tender moments. The band have released an extensive and beloved back catalogue via Scottish DIY labels Fence, Lost Map and Olive Grove Records and are set to release a brand new album, ‘Spirit Level’ on Fika Recordings in February 2021.

In 2018 a touring theatre show called The Isle of Love was devised around the band’s back-catalogue. They’ve recorded several Marc Riley sessions, performed at Green Man, T in the Park, Indietracks and Celtic Connections and have toured with The Burning Hell and James Yorkston. 2020 saw Adam cement his reputation as one of Scotland’s most prolific songwriters, releasing around 40 home-recorded songs via Bandcamp and Patreon as a creative response to Covid-19 restrictions. He also released an album of country-pop music under the pseudonym A.R. Pinewood.

Heaters // Hypnotikk: Juba

November 16th, 2022

Juba
noodle
Lucky Dip

Remember remember the 16th November… we have 3 brilliant acts for you from Edinburgh and beyond and the temperature is gonna reach levels only found on the surface of the sun. Not one to miss.

After Mina blew our socks off last time, another third of Boko! Boko! comes to party down at Sneaky Pete’s. Juba has been playing since 2016 but the excitement she brings to a night just keeps growing. Her sound celebrates African and diasporic music and consistently innovates, explores, and electrifies dancefloors. She’s torn up Panorama Bar (yes, the one at Berghain), delivered an absolutely astonishing Boiler Room, and played across the world. Now you get to see her play the greatest club of them all.

Noodle was one of our favourite performers at last month’s Subterranean Sound a few weeks back, and we knew we had to have her on board with Hypnotikk. She brings heaps of talent, tunes and something we at Hypnotikk love; not taking herself too seriously. The end result is a DJ with infectious energy and unmissable presence.

Last but by no means least, we will be bringing you Lucky Dip. They are Cowgate regulars who have been kicking around the scene for long enough to know exactly what to play, when to play it, and when to turn it up. They’re at the forefront of Edinburgh’s recent uptempo club revolution and they’re sure to bring that manic, restless, juked-out energy to the sweatbox.

Jitwam
Elle Shimada
Willy Soul
For fans of… Greentea Peng, BADBADNOTGOOD, Blood Orange

November 15th, 2022

Introduced to electronic music whilst living in London, Jitwam’s songwriting turned, allowing him to use the rock influences he grew up with and melding them into tightly melodic, luxuriously layered production. His time in New York City allowed him to experiment and understand that he could make a career out of the melodies crafted in his head.

Jitwam is also the co-founder of seminal label The Jazz Diaries, a venture he started to shine a light on artists blurring the lines between electronics and live instrumentation. “The label exists to provide an infrastructure to elevate and execute the dreams artists have in their head,” he says. Over the past two years, Jitwam has also been at the forefront of the current South Asian wave taking over the music industry, including helping establish London-based arts collective and label Chalo.
