Random Rules
Plantoid
3p Slot Machine
Beth Miller
for fans of… The Mars Volta, late period Miles Davis, Black Midi

September 7th, 2024

Random Rules is our new series of monthly shows with the hottest new bands on an affordable £7 adv ticket price!

Plantoid’s debut album Terrapath harnesses prog rock, jazz, fusion, folk, and even a bit of ‘70s hard rock for good measure. It was released this year on Bella Union (the label founded by Simon Raymonde and Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins).

“The sounds, the art, and where our minds go while we’re playing the album takes us to this alien planet that no humans have reached.”

Chloe Spence, vocals and guitar

Plantoid are one of those bands that exceed the sum of their parts, with each member bringing a unique flavour that enhances their sound tenfold. Tom has been playing guitar practically his whole life, and his style, which fluctuates from lush finger-picking to reverb-laden rock riffs, sits very comfortably on top of Louis’ jazz-infused drumming and Bernardo’s intricate basslines. The band find their ace-in-the-hole with Chloe, however—as well as serving as Plantoid’s principle lyricist, her soaring vocals, at times both angelic and alien, propel each song on Terrapath to new heights.

Jimmy Whispers
NANI
Fraser MacCallum
for fans of… Mac DeMarco, Drugdealer, Alvvays

September 3rd, 2024

A lot has changed for everyone in the past few years, and especially for Jimmy Whispers. In another lifetime, he was that sweet kid from Chicago who stole our hearts with his aw-shucks Midwestern attitude and his knack for writing catchy old-time melodies, who legendary critic Jessica Hopper once called the city’s “greatest new homegrown musical enigma”. As for today, Jimmy Whispers is alive and well in Los Angeles. He’s still making music—quite a lot of it. He’s got a blossoming new career as a music video director and filmmaker. He’s become a co-writer for others including Drugdealer and Dent May. He’s got a side hustle as a valet parking attendant, a 1988 Buick Reatta, and a new commitment to making life-affirming art.
