Communion: WASHINGTON IRVING, Fablewood, more tba

Our always-busy Communion showcase nights continue. Now moved to a lazy Sunday monthly slot, expect to see a huge range of talent all the way from 6pm til midnight. On sale soon.

“Their melding of folk songs with sleek, modern pop proved invigorating to watch….Best of all, their material had a raucous nature that made it impossible not to leave in strident spirit.” **** The Herald

“With their debut EP, Washington Irving show a storytelling impetus similar to that of their namesake; considered lyrics paint a picture at the intersection between the past and the present.” **** The Skinny (EP review)

“If there was any justice in the world, Washington Irving would be spread across the playlists of RADIO 1 & BBC 6 music, like a rash!” Tom Robinson – BBC 6 Music

“…Wielding a varied array of instruments, their songs blossom with a life seldom seen outside a full orchestra. Given the size of the room and the attendance, the end result was a joyous cacophony of noise, and an atmosphere of abandon.” Music News

GEMMA HAYES

Gemma Hayes’ much anticipated fourth studio album, Let it Break, will be released on 2nd April and is an evolution of Gemma’s unique style of music, combining prog rock, folk and electronica. The album is a collaboration with producer David Odlum (of The Frames), and features Paul Noonan of Bell X1 and Ann Scott.

Over the years, Gemma’s songs have appeared in countless TV programmes and films from Grey’s Anatomy to One Tree Hill and most recently The Vampire Diaries and the upcoming Abigail Breslin movie, Janie Jones.

Her debut LP, Night on My Side, received much critical acclaim from all corners, garnering a UK Mercury Prize nomination and earning her an award as Ireland’s best female artist. Gemma’s subsequent release, The Roads Don’t Love You, earned her yet another best female artist nod.

JAM CITY (night slugs) at COALITON

The youngest of the Night Slugs crew, Jam City makes romantic grimey house for the club or the jeep or a walk through a waterpark at night. He found Grime around 2003 which changed his perception of music. It sounded totally alien and experimental whilst still having a direct energy at club level. He then found out about Chicago Trax Records and pretty much wanted to live inside the Trax cover of a Chicago sunset. A couple of years after that he started making his own tracks and edits, the rest is Jam City. £3 / members free.

SKYLESS, Jaded Playboy, Pirate Sons

Skyless is a group whose existence owes as much to a strong belief in sticking to your guns as it’s sheer love of the rock music created during the Third Great Awakening. Through thick and thin, through exits and entrances, through a myriad of sea-changes within the musical world – Skyless has remained a constant.

Their sound has been described as rock, rock’n'roll, hard rock and 70′s rock – however, they simply see themselves as a rock band with a wealth of talent, experience and above all else, great taste.

This gig is to celebrate the release of their latest EP, ‘Silence So Loud’, a record so dripping in Southern Fried blues licks you can taste the bourbon

BLONDES
late live show

“The thing that Blondes do amazingly well is make dance music that is perpetually euphoric. They aren’t reinventing the wheel here, but like any great musicians, they understand the genre they’re working within. They understand why people like it and what they’re looking for from it, and they tap deep into that idea. With “Wine,” from the final 12-inch in their ambitious trilogy on RVNG, they take that idea further. It’s all constant build, or actually maybe constant release? Either way, it’s about a single moment stretched out hypnotically for the track’s duration.” The Fader

Communion: THE PALE SEAS, Blue Gold, Jake Mattison, Astrid & Quinn

Southampton five piece with the ability to craft stunningly beautiful pop songs. Tinged with Americana folk yet jarred with English self-depreciation, if there were to be a hallowed union of Beach House and Galaxy 500, then Pale Seas would surely be that love- child – the bands intimate and nocturnal sound is potent enough to melt even the iciest of hearts.

Working with producer combo Jimmy Robertson and Demian Castellanos (Anna Calvi, Big Pink, Florence & The Machine), the band, led by singer and songwriter Jacob Scott, and under the guidance of exlovers’ bassist Danny Blackman, came together to bring some of Jacob’s ultra lo-fi, dreamy bedroom demos to life. Graham and Bish (Matthew), who were old school friends and had played together with Jacob previously in their band Moda Disordini, were asked to play lead guitar and bass, whilst Zealah – Jacob’s then girlfriend – was brought in to sing harmonies.

Netherlands ability to entwine elegant harmonies with lyrical content is way beyond the bands years. Like a night by the fire whilst it rains outside, there’s a richness and subtle grandeur to their sound, a certain sparkle and charm which grows with multiple listens.

EDINBURGH SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF, The Electric Sugar Children, Trixies Big Red Motorbike

The sound of whistling feed-back is totemic to these savages. ESFTD view guitars as instruments of religious communion, as the beacon that will lead their shipwrecked souls ashore to a redemptive beach of noise, saturated with distortion, unconsciousness and happiness. We are devoted to the salvation of speaker hum and the distorted sine wave.

Summer 2012… Legendary proto-indiepoppers Trixie’s Big Red Motorbike emerge blinking from Trixieland with but one desire in their hearts: to blast their melodic noise directly into your face. Mark Litten and his daughter Jane are entertaining music lovers in these exotic locations: Osaka, Tokyo, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, New York, Isle of Wight, London, Scotland, Germany. Don’t miss this one. If you do you’ll regret it. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon. And for the rest of your life.

The Electric Sugar Children play rock n roll with a snarl and a wink, sounding like 80s Creation acts with some added honey and a nip of mescal. The music is diverse guitar driven indie rock n roll with a Reedesque vocal delivery.
